Foreign Film Night: Alam

United States

Examine the conflict in Israel/Palestine from an ordinary teen’s point of view on Thursday, September 12th at 5:30pm with the Palestinian coming-of-age drama Alam.

Alam follows Tamer, a 17-year-old who is a descendant of the Arabs who stayed in the region after the establishment of the modern state of Israel in 1948. His days are spent playing his guitar, goofing off with friends, clumsily flirting with girls – until he falls for Maysaá, an attractive (and politically active) new girl at his school. Tamer, Maysaá and their friends scheme to hoist a Palestinian flag on Israel’s Independence Day to memorialize Al-Nakba (Arabic for “the catastrophe”), where hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arabs were forcibly displaced from their homes to make room for the new Israeli settlers after World War II. Tamer realizes he must weigh his convictions against the risks of rocking the boat in a society where his family has carefully navigated the present system to achieve a middle-class life…

Alam is unrated, in Hebrew and Arabic with subtitles, and runs for 1 hour, 49 minutes.
