Butte Valley Swainson's Hawk Project

United States

Join us at the downtown Klamath County Library on Wednesday, January 15th at 2 pm for a presentation all about the Swainson’s Hawk population in Northern California’s Butte Valley!

Bird researcher Elizabeth Meisman will present preliminary findings from her Master’s Degree research on habitat quality and selection for breeding Swainson's Hawks in the Butte Valley. The Butte Valley is home to a rich diversity of breeding and wintering raptors, and Meisman will also highlight key findings related to other raptor species in the study area.

Meisman’s research is part of an ongoing multi-decade effort examining Swainson’s Hawks in the Butte Valley – one of the longest-running raptor study projects in North America. Don't miss this opportunity to delve into the ecology of these remarkable birds!

Meisman, originally from Colorado, is currently an National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow at Cal Poly Humboldt and a wildlife biologist for Dudek, an employee-owned environmental consulting firm. She is highly engaged in the local community, dedicating her efforts to mentoring students and early-career scientists. Additionally, she contributes to long-term monitoring initiatives through various activities, including bird banding, participation in community science survey efforts, and leading birding field trips.

This presentation is brought to you by the Friends of the Klamath County Library, and will be followed by the group’s quarterly business meeting.

Both the presentation and the business meeting will be livestreamed online – email the Friends at folklamath@gmail.com for the Zoom link.
