The Book to Film Book Group reads books that got adapted into movies, and gathers to watch the film adaptation on the last Wednesday of the month at 5:30 pm.
This month's book is Nightmare Alley, a crime thriller written by William Lindsay Gresham. Drifter Stan Carlisle gets a job at a carnival sideshow, working with clairvoyant "Madame Zeena" and her husband. Stan quickly learns the tricks of the mentalist grift, and reinvents himself as a celebrity psychic for the wealthy elite in Buffalo, New York. Hoping for a big score, he develops a scheme to con a wealthy tycoon, with a little assistance from an enigmatic psychologist with whom he forms a complicated relationship...
The film's 2021 adaptation is rated R for severe violence/gore, some sexual content, nudity and language. It runs for 2 hours, 30 minutes.
