Early Literacy Activities

Do 15 minutes of these activities with your under-5 child to earn a day of progress for the Summer Reading Challenge!

(You can do any activity you like, and you can do them more than once. Do what you and your child enjoy doing!)

  • Read a book together
  • Scribble with crayons
  • Play with blocks and shapes
  • Sing nursery rhymes
  • Make a “sensory bin” full of rice and toys to dig for
  • Dance
  • Play with scarves or scrap fabric (carefully!) to improve their grip
  • Narrate your actions to your little one throughout the day
  • Put on a puppet show
  • Make the alphabet out of play dough or kinetic sand
  • Let your little one “help you” turn the pages of a book
  • Describe the texture and taste of food while cooking & eating
  • Read books that rhyme
  • Point out words you see on signs as you go about your day
  • Have your little one draw a picture and tell you a story about what’s in it
  • Go for a walk outside
