Foreign Film Night: Writing with Fire

United States

Note: this screening was originally scheduled for March 14th but was canceled due to snow.

Women from the lowest caste in India risk everything to speak truth to power with their journalism in the documentary Writing with Fire, screening on April 11th at 5:30 pm at the downtown Klamath County Library.

Writing with Fire follows journalists at Khabar Lahariya, the only news agency in India run by Dalit women – the lowest stratum in India’s caste system, sometimes called the “untouchables.”  Khabar Lahariya is transitioning from a print newspaper to digital journalism filmed on smartphones. These women journalists are breaking traditions as they confront India’s most challenging issues in its remotest communities. The film has won numerous awards, including accolades at Sundance Film Festival and an Oscar nomination.

Writing with Fire is unrated, in Hindi with subtitles, and runs for 1 hour, 32 minutes.
