Foreign Film Night: Drive My Car

A theater director copes with grief and loss following the premature death of his wife in the Japanese drama Drive My Car, screening at the downtown Klamath County Library on Tuesday, August 9th at 5:30 pm.

Based on Haruki Murakami’s short story of the same name from his collection Men Without Women, the film follows actor and director Yusuke after his wife, a screenwriter named Oto, dies from a sudden brain hemorrhage. Yusuke’s theater career is thrown into tumult by the tragedy and his theater company insists that Yusuke stop driving and be chauffeured in his vehicle by Misaki, a young woman the same age Yusuke’s daughter would have been had his family survived. The two bond over shared trauma and grief, helping each other to heal…

Drive My Car is unrated, in Japanese (plus English, Korean Sign Language, German, Mandarin, Tagalog, Korean and Indonesian) with English subtitles, and runs for 2 hours, 59 minutes.
